Session 1

Understanding pain to focus assessment

What you’ll learn:

  • Understand the differences between acute and chronic pain
  • Be able to explain these differences to your patients
  • Understand the biopsychosocial model of pain
  • Gain an overview of pain classification
  • Understand risk factors and prognostic factors in chronic pain
  • Develop a focused approach to assessment
  • Understand the Yellow Flags approach
  • Start to individualise therapy based on Yellow Flags
Session 2

Help your patients to stay active despite pain

What you’ll learn:

  • Gain a clear understanding of activity management
  • Recognise the disadvantages of “activity cycling”
  • Have a useful understanding of baseline setting and “stop rules”
  • Support your patient in identifying important life domains for goalsetting
  • Help your patients to set goals for key activities
  • Understand self-efficacy, and be able to identify changes in self-efficacy
Session 3

Cognitive and behavioural approaches

What you’ll learn:

  • Be able to identify the multiple sources of distress due to pain
  • Identify the limits of physiotherapy practice in managing distress
  • Develop a working model of the cognitive behavioural approach
  • Understand the links between fear avoidance and cognitions
  • Help your patients to develop a flare up plan
