Programme

Session 1

How to improve our clinical examination skills

This lecture will focus on developing a systematic approach to the patient. Traditionally veterinary medicine teaches us to break down problems into component parts. Rehabilitation takes the opposite approach and the aim of this session will be to understand how to apply engineering principles to lameness diagnosis in order to develop a holistic approach that targets whole body movement. With this information onboard we can target our rehabilitation interventions much more effectively and consequently improve our clinical outcomes.

What you’ll learn:

  • To develop an understanding of a systems based approach to lameness examination
  • To better understand the role of the core in lameness prevention and management
  • To develop a better understanding of neuromotor control of the gait through its stance and flight phase
  • To develop an understanding of gait assessment tools such as the Gait 4 system
  • To develop a systematic approach to soft tissue evaluation from skin through to the deep fascia
  • To look at how we can challenge the normal gait and stance pattern to provide a more functional approach to diagnosis
Session 2

Cats and dogs, how do we know that they are in pain

This lecture will focus on pain diagnosis and management in companion animal practice and how being in pain is perceived in the 21st Century. Whilst acute pain is generally well understood and managed, the same is not true of chronic pain. This lecture will consider the difference between nociception and pain and how with this knowledge we can improve quality of life for our patients. We will consider where bad behaviour stops and pain starts and how we can improve quality of life with non pharmacological intervention.

What you’ll learn:

  • To consider how proficient we are at evaluating acute and chronic pain
  • To develop an understanding of nociception and pain
  • To develop an understanding of pain expression in different species
  • To consider the psychological impact of exercise restriction and sterile environments in companion animals and how we can use rehabilitation to enrich environments
  • To consider the evidence for non pharmacological intervention in pain management
  • To consider pain and behaviour and understand how they impact on each other
  • To become proficient at using our clinical examination skills to better develop a comprehensive and holistic pain management regime
Session 3

How to use my tools better

No tool is inherently good or bad, it is the hands of the clinician that determines whether they will assist or delay healing.
This lecture will consider the science behind the commonly used tools in veterinary rehabilitation and how to use this knowledge to improve clinical practice.

What you’ll learn:

  • To understand the science of electrotherapies
  • To develop a better understanding of which modality to use when targeting specific tissues
  • To develop a better understanding of the laws that electrotherapy
  • To develop an understanding of how to use our tools intelligently to positively affect tissue healing
  • To consider the research that underpins modality use in practice
  • To develop an understanding of how to use our tools safely in practice

The price includes all 3 sessions, notes and quiz – 8 hours of CPD
