Session 1

Fracture Biology

This session will cover the fundamentals for success in orthopaedic surgery. By learning how to evaluate a fracture; we can choose the best method of fixation to achieve a successful outcome. Understanding how fractures heal will allow us to tailor our repair to maximise the regenerative power of bone biology.

Session 2

Internal Fixation & Pre-operative Care

Hardware: screws, plates, pins, nails, wire. There is a range of implants that can be used to stabilise fractures. In this session we will review what implants are available, how they should be used, and how to choose which ones are best for individual fractures. Real life case examples will be included.
More than just the bone! We will cover pre-operative management to get our patient safely into the operating room. Surgical access to the fracture means avoiding nerves, blood vessels, muscles, tendons, and ligaments; we will review some approaches to common fractures.

What you’ll learn:

  • Pre-operative patient management
  • Internal fixation implants available
  • How to use each type of implant
  • How to choose the most appropriate implant

Session 3

External Skeletal Fixation & Post-operative Care

After theatre. The end of the operation isn’t the end of the surgeons role. Recommending appropriate aftercare not only helps protect the repair but can expedite the recovery with the inclusion of rehabilitation. We will learn how to assess fracture healing and spot complications early; so we can check that we are on our way to union and a successful outcome.

What you’ll learn:
