Programme

Session 1

Concepts of sports medicine and sporting/working activities

In the first session, we will talk about the different sporting/working activities, the physical and mental requirements for sports and work, nutrition for the different types of activities, as well as the different gaits and anatomical variations of animals involved in these activities.

What you’ll learn:

  • The different sporting events and working activities dogs may be involved in
  • The physical, mental and nutritional requirements for the different sports
  • The types of gaits, anatomical variations and their evaluation
  • The risks of the different sporting events
Session 2

Forelimb and hindlimb conditions/injuries of sporting and working dogs

In the second session we will focus on the most common injuries in sporting and working dogs. We will discuss the clinical signs, diagnostics and management of forelimb injuries, such as supraspinatus or bicipital tendinopathy, elbow dysplasia or carpal and toes injuries, among others. We will also cover the most common injuries in the hindlimb of sporting and working dogs such as iliopsoas strain, gracilis injury/contracture, cranial cruciate ligament disease or common calcaneal tendinopathy, among others, including their aethiology, clinical signs, diagnostics and management.

What you’ll learn:

  • The different types of forelimb and hindlimb injuries and musculoskeletal conditions sporting and working dogs may present
  • How to use the available diagnostic tools in the investigation of these conditions
  • Management of patients with these musculoskeletal conditions and the rehabilitation options we have available for them
Session 3

Physiotherapy and rehabilitation

In the third session, our attention will be centered on physiotherapy and rehabilitation. We will go over the physical therapies available currently, manual therapy that we could apply to these animals, as well as therapeutic exercises we can use to improve the recovery of our athlete patients and reduce the risk of reinjury, We will also talk about hydrotherapy and other therapies currently used for the management of sporting injuries and maintenance of these dogs´ fitness level.

What you’ll learn:

  • The physical therapies currently available to manage sporting and working injuries
  • Which manual therapies can we use, when and how to apply them
  • Exercises (passive, assisted and active) that can be performed to treat different musculoskeletal conditions and injuries, and prevent reinjury
  • Other therapies available to the physiotherapist , as well as when and how to apply them
