Worm control

Worm control in cats and dogs forms part of routine preventative healthcare, reducing disease risk for pets and owners. This is achieved through risk based preventative treatments and reducing exposure risk through a range of other measures. This module will consider the worms of veterinary significance parasitising cats and dogs, their diagnosis and the role of routine treatment, diagnostics, diet, hygiene and responsible disposal of dog faeces in their control.

What you’ll learn:

• To recognise the different types of parasitic worm of veterinary and zoonotic significance in UK cats and dogs
• To understand the available tools for their diagnosis, their importance and limitations
• To appreciate the role of routine preventative treatment in worm control and the importance of taking a risk based approach
• To review current evidence for anthelmintic resistance and how it differs in cats and dogs when compared to ruminants and horses.
• To understand the importance of hygiene, diet and responsible disposal of faeces in reducing zoonotic risk

Fleas

Flea control remains vital in cats and dogs to prevent household infestations and the misery, irritation, allergic skin disease and zoonotic risk they bring. This module explains the rationale behind year round flea prevention in cats and dogs, methods for detecting flea infestations, the zoonotic risk infestations represent and methods for improving compliance and reducing environmental impact with insecticides. Control of existing infestations will also be considered.

What you’ll learn:

• To revise the veterinary significance of flea infestations and their zoonotic implications
• To review the zoonotic pathogens transmitted by Ctenocephalides felis, particularly Bartonella henselae and Rickettsia felis
• To understand the rationale for year round flea control in UK cats and dogs
• To understand factors leading to flea control breakdown and how to minimise them
• To review flea resistance and environmental contamination with insecticide and how client education and compliance can limit these.
• To be able to control existing household infestations.

Ticks

Changes in climate, habitat and human activity is resulting in increased contact between UK ticks, people and pets. This is leading to spread of tick-borne pathogens and increased incidence of human disease. The incidence of tick-borne disease in cats and dogs is less certain but exposure to ticks and the pathogens they carry is growing. This module covers the tick-borne pathogens in the UK relevant to cats and dogs, their zoonotic risk and the ticks that transmit them. The factors driving increased tick distributions and activity will be considered as well as methods to minimise the risk of transmission in cats, dogs and humans at risk of exposure.

What you’ll learn:

• To understand the factors driving tick exposure.
• To review the tick-borne pathogens, present in the UK of relevance to cats and dogs.
• To explore their zoonotic potential
• To be able to recognise the risks of exposure and to put effective tick prevention measures in place
• To be able to give basic tick prevention advice to pet owners to keep themselves safe, while not crossing the line into human medical advice.
