This 3-part mini series is aimed at those looking to advance their care of emergent and critically ill cats and dogs. The webinars will cover the theory of a wide variety of subjects with a particular emphasis on practical skills that can be employed in the clinic. The first session will focus on identifying, quantifying and addressing shock, of various causes. The second session will focus on advanced respiratory system management. The final session will cover the practical interpretation and application of venous blood gas measurements and also how to nutritionally support hospitalised patients.

Programme

Session 1

Advanced cardiovascular stabilisation

What you’ll learn:

  • Full classification of shock states seen in dogs and cats and how to differentiate between them
  • Several advanced patient assessment techniques including: Patient side ultrasound techniques, The use of direct arterial and central venous pressure measurements, Use of blood gas measurements in the assessment of shock.
  • How to trouble shoot cases with persistent hypotension
  • When and how to use vasopressor and inotropic therapies
Session 2

Respiratory management

What you’ll learn:

  • How to obtain an airway in challenging cases
  • Alternative methods of providing oxygen therapy
  • How to avoid oxygen toxicity
  • Objective assessment of respiratory function using blood gas analysis and patient monitoring tools
  • Indications for mechanical ventilation and a guide to performing short term ventilation in practice, including anaesthesia, monitoring, complications and nursing considerations
  • Options for airway sampling for investigation of lung disease
Session 3

Metabolic challenges

What you’ll learn:

  • A systematic approach to venous blood gas analysis including how it can help in the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of numerous clinical scenarios
  • Nutritional support of critically ill patients including: Identifying patients in need of nutritional support, Selecting and placing feeding tubes, When to use parenteral nutrition, Creating nutritional plans for hospitalised patients.
