Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most common endocrinopathy in dogs and cats worldwide, with a significant proportion of patients developing diabetic complications and/or being difficult to stabilise. DM cases are also the most common endocrine emergencies presenting to primary care practitioners. In the majority of dogs, DM is a lifelong diagnosis so every effort should be made to understand all aspects of that individual’s diabetes and try and create a robust, sustainable management programme that is suitable both for the patient and owner. In cats, however, DM is increasingly recognised as a treatable disease with up to 85% of cases achieving remission.
