Session 1:

Approaching the Anaemic Patient

  • Review of red cell physiology and the approach to patients with anaemia
  • Assessment of laboratory findings
    • Blood smear analysis
    • Understanding red cell parameters
    • Cytological morphology
    • How to classify causes of anaemia
  • Understand how, when and where to take a bone marrow biopsy
  • Introduction to transfusion medicine
    • How to collect and administer a transfusion
    • What component therapies might be useful from veterinary blood banks
Session 2:

The Causes of Anaemia and How to Treat Them Successfully

  • Causes of regenerative anaemia
    • Blood loss anaemia
    • Haemolysis
    • Immune mediated red cell destruction
  • Treatment options for immune mediated haemolytic anaemia including which immunosuppressive therapies should be considered
  • Causes of non-regenerative anaemia, including chronic renal failure and bone marrow disease
  • Understanding how and when to use erythropoietin
  • Plenty of case-based examples
Session 3:

Approach To and Treatment Of the Bleeding Patient

  • Coagulation in cats and dogs, including recent advances in understanding
  • Assessment of laboratory and patient side tests of coagulation
  • Primary coagulation disorders – thrombocytopenia, thrombocytopathia and von Willibrand’s disease
  • Secondary coagulation disorders
    • Inherited diseases such as haemophilia A and B, and Hageman factor deficiency
    • Acquired disorders such as rodenticide toxicity
  • Understanding disseminated intravascular coagulation and treatment options
