These fully flexible online courses include tutor support and interaction via an interactive discussion forum you can ask questions and join the discussion at any time, wherever you are in the world. There are no ‘real time’ sessions that you need to be available for, so this course is suitable for you whatever your time zone. All of your course materials are all recorded, and you have full access for a 12 month period. The course runs for a six week period, and you’ll get tutor support for a further 2 weeks in case you need to catch up. After that, you’ll still have full access although the tutor support will end. Complete your learning and get your CPD Certificate for 25 Hours of CPD.

Head and neck surgery can be daunting as the anatomy may not be as familiar as that of the abdomen but such cases offer an exciting opportunity to expand your skills base.  The aim of this online course is to give you a thorough grounding in the diagnosis, surgical management and post-surgical care of common diseases seen affecting the head and neck using a practical approach to make the most of the staff and facilities you have available.

What you will learn:-

Session 1

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome – Aetiology and Diagnosis: Surgery and Aftercare

With the increasing popularity of such breeds, brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome is becoming an ever more common diagnosis.  These sessions will discuss the aetiology of this condition and then discuss decision making, diagnosis, surgery and post-surgical management.

Session 2

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome – emergency presentation and management

Surgery of the larynx

The first of these two sessions will explore practical techniques for stabilisation and management of patients with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome which present in a respiratory crisis including placement and management of a temporary tracheostomy tube and aspiration pneumonia.  The second surgery will explore other surgical conditions of the larynx; focussing predominantly on the diagnosis and management of laryngeal paralysis but also looking at laryngeal neoplasia and laryngeal collapse.

Session 3

Ear surgery

This session will focus on the diagnosis and management of otitis externa and media. We will explore common surgical procedures such as total ear canal ablation including the diagnosis and management of post-operative complications.

Session 4

Diagnosis and management of Neoplasia of the oral cavity

Mandibulectomy and Maxillectomy

Neoplasia of the oral cavity is a common diagnosis and with recent advances in both surgical and adjuvant treatments such as radiotherapy, there are a wealth of options available for managing such patients.  These sessions will explore the more common types of neoplasia affecting the oral cavity and provide a step by step guide for the more common surgical procedures performed such as rostral mandibulectomy.

Session 5

Skin Reconstruction Techniques: Head and Neck

Trauma of the head and neck

During the first of these two sessions we will discuss surgical management of skin lesions around the head and neck including reconstruction techniques around the nasal planum and the use of axial pattern flaps.  The second session will focus on how we approach trauma cases; focussing on RTA trauma and pharyngeal stick injuries.

Session 6

What if it’s not cancer? Management of non-neoplastic lesions of the head and neck

Thyroid Surgery

In these two sessions we will focus firstly on the management of tracking foreign bodies and salivary mucoceles and then we’ll discuss the diagnosis and surgical management of common diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid glands.
