Haematology and Cytology

Test Your Knowledge!

Question

The cells pointed to by the arrows are seen on a blood smear from an anaemic 9 year old MN GSD. Do you know the name of these cells?

Answer

These cells are nucleated red blood cells in different stages of development.

These cells together with the marked anisocytosis (red blood cells of different stages) and polychromasia (the large blue cells are the polychromatophils which are immature red blood cells) indicate that the anaemia is regenerative.
